Plan B One-Step is an emergency contraceptive containing a single 1.5mg tablet of levonorgestrel, intended to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or known/suspected contraceptive failure (for example, a broken condom or missed dose of regular birth control). It is most effective when taken as soon as possible within 72 hours. Levonorgestrel is a progestin hormone that has been used in birth control for decades. Plan B is sold over the counter without a prescription in the US, and levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception is available OTC in Mexico (regulated by COFEPRIS since 2010).
